4 Days Maasai Mara Fly-In Safari

See the Kenyan countryside from above before your guide meets you beside a Mara airstrip. This fly-in route replaces the long Nairobi road transfers with scheduled domestic flights, keeping three nights for the rhythm of the reserve. You can return to productive wildlife areas on different days and spend time with an interesting sighting rather than treat every drive as a new checklist. The itinerary suits visitors with limited time who want two full wildlife days and accept the luggage and scheduling constraints that come with light-aircraft travel.

Begin at an agreed Nairobi address, transfer to Wilson Airport and take a scheduled flight to the Mara airstrip confirmed in your itinerary. A local guide brings you to the safari area, with the first wildlife drive fitted around the flight time. Explore on days two and three with morning and afternoon drives or an agreed picnic programme. Fly back to Wilson on day four, then transfer to your agreed Nairobi destination with a buffer for any onward flight.

The programme includes the listed domestic flights and local shared game drives unless your written quote specifies a private vehicle upgrade. It is a fly-in safari, not a private charter. Flight times, airstrips, soft-bag luggage limits and seat availability are checked before confirmation. Wildlife viewing follows reserve road rules; balloon flights and conservancy activities are optional and need separate arrangements. Tell us about mobility needs early because light aircraft and safari vehicles have specific boarding requirements.

Ideal for: Travellers who prefer flying over long road transfers and want two full Mara wildlife days.

Day by day

Day 1

Wilson Airport to a Mara airstrip

Your Nairobi transfer takes you to Wilson Airport in time for check-in on the scheduled domestic flight named in your itinerary. Keep your camera and essential items in your cabin bag, while following the airline’s confirmed baggage rules. The aircraft may serve several airstrips, so the exact flying time and order depend on the day’s operation. Meet the local guiding team at your Mara airstrip and continue to the safari area. Lunch and an afternoon wildlife drive are fitted around the arrival time. Your three-night stay leaves two full days clear, so there is no need to force a long first drive after a delayed flight.

Day 2

A full day on the Mara plains

Start with a morning game drive, looking for the movements that are easier to notice before the heat builds. A guide may pause beside grazing zebra, follow the calls of birds or wait while a lion pride settles into shade. The vehicle follows the reserve roads and gives wildlife room to move. Return for lunch and a rest, or use a designated picnic stop if the guide recommends staying out. The afternoon brings a different angle on familiar country, with soft light and time for questions. Shared drives work around the confirmed programme and the other guests, while a private vehicle offers more individual flexibility when quoted.

Day 3

Choose patient wildlife watching over a rush

Use your second full Mara day to revisit the places and animals that caught your attention yesterday. Rather than promise a river crossing or one particular predator, your guide follows current wildlife activity and safe, authorised access. Scan the plains for elephant and giraffe, stop to identify a bird and watch how a herd responds to its surroundings. A morning and afternoon drive leave time for lunch, rest and sorting your photographs between outings. If you have pre-booked an optional balloon flight, the guiding team coordinates the remaining drive schedule around it. Otherwise the day stays focused on the included game drives and the changing light.

Day 4

Return flight to Wilson and your Nairobi transfer

Have breakfast and enjoy the final morning in the Mara area before the transfer to your confirmed airstrip. A short drive may fit if the flight time permits, but it is not a guaranteed extra wildlife session. Check your luggage weight and keep travel documents close to hand before boarding the scheduled flight back to Wilson Airport. Your driver meets you in Nairobi for the destination agreed in your quote. Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are separate airports, and domestic delays or city traffic can affect a connection. Leave a generous buffer approved by the team, or add a Nairobi night before your international departure.

Frequently asked questions

Are the flights private charters?
No. The programme uses scheduled domestic flights between Wilson Airport and a confirmed Mara airstrip. A charter can be requested separately and changes the quote.
Are game drives private?
The standard fly-in arrangement uses the local safari team’s shared vehicle programme. A private vehicle may be requested at extra cost and must be stated in your quote. Flying to the Mara does not by itself mean exclusive game drives.
How much luggage can I bring?
Light-aircraft routes usually require compact soft bags and a limited total weight. The exact allowance, including hand luggage, is confirmed with the booked airline. Ask us about Nairobi bag storage before arriving with larger cases.
Can I connect directly to an international flight?
The return lands at Wilson, while most international departures use JKIA. We need to check the flight timings, separate airport transfer and a generous delay buffer before recommending a same-day connection.
How long is the 4 Days Maasai Mara Fly-In Safari?
It runs 4 days / 3 nights, travelling Nairobi → Maasai Mara → Nairobi. See the itinerary for every stop and activity.
