10 Days Best of Kenya Wildlife Safari
Samburu, rhino conservation, Rift Valley lakes and three nights in the Maasai Mara
10 Days Best of Kenya Wildlife Safari
Your first safari need not look the same every morning. This Kenya circuit moves from the dry river country of Samburu into rhino habitat near Mount Kenya, then through the Rift Valley lakes before settling on the Maasai Mara plains. You have time to notice the details: a giraffe's patterned coat, an antelope reaching into thorn branches, or the small movements of a herd that reward a longer look. The journey combines wildlife viewing with an introduction to the work of conservation, without requiring a border crossing.
Start with a Nairobi arrival night, then spend two nights in Samburu before travelling to Ol Pejeta. Continue to Lake Nakuru for wildlife viewing and Lake Naivasha for an easier afternoon beside the freshwater lake. Your final three nights are in the Maasai Mara, giving you two complete days on the reserve roads before returning to Nairobi on day ten. The base route travels by road in your own safari vehicle; optional flights, a Naivasha boat outing and specialist experiences are quoted separately.
Your driver-guide reserves space for breaks, questions and patient observation. Morning and afternoon drives follow each area's visitor rules, with meals and rest fitted around the day's route. Choose optional experiences before travel so their timings are clear. Accommodation details, access arrangements and any adjustments are confirmed with your quote.
Ideal for: First-time Kenya visitors who want northern wildlife, rhino conservation and unhurried Mara viewing in one private road safari.
The journey in brief
Begin with an airport transfer and an overnight in Nairobi before heading north for two nights in Samburu. A full reserve day introduces the dry-country wildlife before you move to Ol Pejeta for game drives and conservation interpretation. Continue through Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha, with one night at each lake and an optional boat outing at Naivasha. Three nights in the Maasai Mara provide two full wildlife days before the road return to Nairobi on day ten. Your vehicle and guide are private to your party. The trip includes nine overnight stays and the listed meals; domestic flights, specialist experiences and optional excursions are arranged separately.
Highlights
Day by day
Arrive in Nairobi and prepare for the north
Your journey begins at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where your transfer meets you for the drive to your Nairobi overnight stop. Settle in, unpack what you need for the evening and leave the rest of the day open after your flight. Your guide confirms the next morning's departure and talks through the route, luggage and any dietary or mobility requirements. Dinner is included, with time to rest before the first road journey. City visits can be quoted separately for early arrivals, but no attraction booking is assumed in this arrival day.
From the central highlands to Samburu
After breakfast, begin the road journey north with your driver-guide, passing cultivated highlands before the landscape becomes drier beyond Isiolo. Plan much of the day for travel, with comfort breaks and lunch timed around your departure and road conditions. As you approach Samburu, look for the change from fields to thorn trees and the first views of the surrounding hills. Once settled, an introductory game drive is possible if arrival and reserve opening hours allow. There is no need to chase every sighting this afternoon: tomorrow gives you a full day to explore the reserve.
Northern species along the Ewaso Nyiro
Follow the reserve roads beside the Ewaso Nyiro and then into drier country, where doum palms give way to thorn scrub. Look for reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich, learning the details that distinguish these northern species. Elephants may come towards the river, although water levels and wildlife routes change with rainfall. Your guide balances patient viewing with a break through the hottest part of the day. A second drive catches the softer light on the surrounding hills, and you finish with a better feel for how animals live in this demanding environment.
South to Ol Pejeta and rhino country
Leave Samburu after breakfast and return towards the highlands around Nanyuki. You trade dry river country for the open grassland of Ol Pejeta, with Mount Kenya visible when the weather clears. After entry formalities and lunch, head out on the conservancy roads to look for rhino, buffalo, elephant and grazing antelope. Your guide uses the afternoon to introduce the different protection needs of wildlife living alongside people and livestock. Public conservation interpretation areas can be visited when open. Specialist animal encounters and night drives require separate advance arrangements and are optional additions.
Across the highlands to Lake Nakuru
An early start allows a short Ol Pejeta drive if conditions permit, before breakfast and the onward journey to Lake Nakuru. The route crosses the highlands towards the Rift Valley, with breaks that keep the transfer comfortable. Lunch and park entry set the timing for an afternoon drive through woodland and open grass. Search for rhino and giraffe while watching how the lake influences the surrounding habitat. Flamingo numbers change with water conditions, so the day focuses on the whole park rather than one expected spectacle. Finish around Lake Nakuru with dinner and time to rest.
Nakuru wildlife and a slower afternoon at Naivasha
Explore Lake Nakuru's permitted roads in the morning, adjusting the drive around wildlife activity and the onward departure. Rhino may feed in the open while birds move between the woodland and lake edge; your guide gives each sighting time. Continue south to Lake Naivasha, where the afternoon has a gentler rhythm after several travel days. Enjoy lunch and quiet time in an authorised lakeside area, following local guidance around hippo. A boat outing or guided Crescent Island visit can be arranged at extra cost if requested ahead and conditions allow. Neither excursion is required to enjoy this restful stop.
Through the Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara
Set off after breakfast for the Maasai Mara, with a planned break around the road journey through Narok. Farmland gradually gives way to wider grassland, and the final approach may be slow and uneven. Keep your binoculars handy but allow the guide to concentrate on the road and arrival formalities. Lunch is arranged around the transfer, followed by time to settle into your base for the next three nights. If daylight and reserve hours permit, take a first drive on the designated roads. The two full days ahead give you space to explore without rushing this arrival.
A full wildlife day across the Mara plains
Begin in the cool morning air, choosing your route with the guide around current sightings and the areas accessible from your overnight base. Elephant, buffalo and herds of antelope bring movement to the grassland, while a patient search may reveal lion or cheetah. A packed lunch can keep you out for a longer circuit, or you can return for a midday break before another drive. At river viewpoints, watch from authorised areas and let wildlife keep its space. Seasonal migration herds may add another dimension, but this is a year-round wildlife itinerary and crossings cannot be promised.
A second full day to watch wildlife behaviour
Use your final full Mara day to return to an area that interested you or explore a different permitted circuit. With no transfer to fit in, you can watch a herd negotiate a track, follow the changing light on a giraffe or wait while a resting cat becomes active. Your guide balances that patience with meals and a proper rest during the warmest hours. An optional balloon flight or community visit can be coordinated in advance at extra cost, subject to availability. Finish with dinner and a review of tomorrow's road schedule before your last night in the Mara.
Return from the Mara to Nairobi
After breakfast, begin the substantial road journey back to Nairobi, with comfort stops and a buffer for the final approach to the city. Your guide agrees the departure around your overnight location and the expected track conditions. Lunch on the road is at your own expense today. Finish at your Nairobi address or the airport for a suitably timed onward flight. Share international flight details before booking so the connection can be assessed. A scheduled flight from the Mara can be quoted as an alternative, with its own luggage rules and a separate airport transfer.
