6 Days Samburu & Laikipia Wildlife Safari

Northern Kenya asks you to look closely. A giraffe's coat, a zebra's stripes and an antelope's feeding posture tell you that this is a different wildlife community from the southern plains. Three nights in Samburu give you more than one full day to explore, before the journey turns to Laikipia's conservancy country. Here, the interest extends beyond a sighting to the way land is managed, with time to hear local explanations and watch wildlife moving through a working conservation landscape.

Drive north from Nairobi to Samburu for three nights and two full wildlife days. Continue to the Laikipia conservancy identified in your confirmed itinerary for two nights and a complete day of guided game drives, then return to Nairobi on day six. Any walking or evening activities are optional and depend on that conservancy's permissions, available guides and age rules; they are never assumed as part of standard access.

You travel with a driver-guide who leaves room for questions, patient wildlife watching and proper breaks. The daily plan follows park rules, weather and actual animal movement; sightings can never be guaranteed. Your confirmed itinerary lists the arrangements and inclusions clearly, while optional activities are agreed separately before you travel. Bring curiosity, comfortable layers and enough space on your camera for the moments between the headline sightings.

Ideal for: Travellers who want time in northern Kenya and a conservancy stay with locally explained conservation.

Day by day

Day 1

From Nairobi to Samburu

Meet your driver-guide at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after an early arrival, or at your Nairobi address. A short briefing covers the route, comfort stops and the wildlife etiquette you will use throughout the trip. Travel north through the central highlands and across the equator before descending towards Isiolo and the dry country of Samburu; this is a full transfer day. You pause for lunch before settling into the landscape at an unhurried pace. Any afternoon wildlife drive depends on road conditions and your arrival time; your guide keeps the following full day clear for exploration. Bring your camera into the vehicle rather than packing it away, because the journey itself often brings your first memorable sightings.

Day 2

Northern species along the Ewaso Nyiro

Follow the reserve roads beside the Ewaso Nyiro and then into drier country, where doum palms give way to thorn scrub. Look for reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich, learning the details that distinguish these northern species. Elephants may come towards the river, although water levels and wildlife routes change with rainfall. Your guide balances patient viewing with a break through the hottest part of the day. A second drive catches the softer light on the surrounding hills, and you finish with a better feel for how animals live in this demanding environment.

Day 3

A second day in Samburu's dry country

Return to the reserve with a clearer idea of its habitats and the animals you would like to spend more time watching. Your guide may search open ground for oryx and ostrich, then follow woodland near the river for elephant or a resting leopard. Nothing is guaranteed, so a quiet hour becomes a chance to notice tracks, bird calls and the smaller animals often missed on a first drive. Break for lunch and rest through the heat before a final Samburu afternoon. With two full days here, you can revisit productive areas without rushing to complete a checklist.

Day 4

Onward to Laikipia

After breakfast you pack up and continue with your driver-guide, leaving time for breaks and a proper lunch. Travel south from Samburu towards the agreed Laikipia conservancy, where your local guiding team explains the permitted routes and the programme for the following day. As you travel, your guide explains how rainfall, altitude and land use shape the country outside your window. The afternoon programme stays flexible around road conditions and park entry formalities. You arrive with time to settle in and talk through the next day, choosing a practical start that gives you the best light without making the transfer feel rushed.

Day 5

A full day in the Laikipia landscape

Spend the day in the Laikipia conservancy confirmed in your travel documents, exploring open grassland and scrub with its local guiding team. The value here is time to understand one place: how animals move between water and grazing, and how conservation shares land with local livelihoods. Morning and afternoon game drives are included, with a long pause for lunch and rest. An optional guided walk can be arranged only where the conservancy permits it, with the required guide and age restrictions. Your guide follows the rules of this particular conservancy, so off-road driving and night outings are never assumed.

Day 6

Return to Nairobi

Enjoy breakfast and a last look at Laikipia before beginning the return journey to Nairobi. Drive south through the central highlands, pausing along the way to stretch your legs and enjoy a relaxed lunch. Your guide plans comfort stops and leaves a sensible buffer for traffic approaching the capital. Choose an evening international departure only after the road schedule has been agreed, or finish at your Nairobi address and fly the following day. Before saying goodbye, you have time to compare favourite sightings, check that your bags and camera equipment are with you, and exchange the notes that will help you identify the birds and animals in your photographs.

Frequently asked questions

When should I arrive in Nairobi?
