10 Days Hell's Gate, Lake Natron & Serengeti Adventure
Cycle Hell's Gate, scramble a gorge and summit Ol Doinyo Lengai by headtorch for sunrise
10 Days Hell's Gate, Lake Natron & Serengeti Adventure
This is East Africa with the throttle open. In the first days you ride mountain bikes through Hell's Gate, where zebras graze beneath red cliffs and steam drifts from the ground, then squeeze through a narrow volcanic gorge and, if you like, rope up on Fischer's Tower. A day later you are among the lions and big herds of the Maasai Mara, resting your legs for what is to come.
A light aircraft carries you over the border to Lake Natron, a rust-red soda lake and the most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos in East Africa. You wade a river gorge to a waterfall, then, at midnight, set off up Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only volcano on Earth that erupts carbonatite lava. Six hours of steep ash and rock bring you to the rim at sunrise, with steam rising from the crater and the rift spread out below.
Then the trip exhales. A rough road through Maasai highlands brings you into the Serengeti for two nights of big-cat game drives, and a short flight to Arusha closes the loop. It is demanding, and it is meant to be: every view on this route is earned on foot or on pedals.
Ideal for: Fit, adventurous travellers who want sweat, scree and sunrise summits mixed in with their big game, and who will trade a night's sleep for a view few people ever see.
The journey in brief
After landing in Nairobi you head to Hell's Gate for a day of cycling and a gorge scramble, sleeping on the shore of Lake Naivasha. Next morning brings an optional rock-climbing session or a boat trip before the drive west to the Maasai Mara, where a full day of game drives gives your legs a break. On day five a light aircraft takes you via the Migori and Kogatende border airstrips to Lake Natron for an evening on the flamingo flats. The following day you wade to a waterfall, and that night you set off up Ol Doinyo Lengai to reach the rim at sunrise before recovering by the lake. A long drive through Loliondo takes you into the Serengeti for two nights, and a scheduled flight to Arusha connects with your evening departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Highlights
Day by day
Nairobi Touchdown
Your driver-guide is waiting in the arrivals hall at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to take you to your Nairobi base. If your flight lands early, stretch your legs on a short trail in Karura Forest, the city's big woodland, with bamboo groves, a small waterfall and Sykes' monkeys. In the evening your adventure leader runs the briefing: the shape of the next ten days, bike sizes for tomorrow, and an honest talk about the Ol Doinyo Lengai climb, what it demands and how you'll pace yourself towards it. Pack light, as a 15 kg soft-bag limit applies on the border flight. Sleep well; tomorrow starts on two wheels.
Pedalling Among Zebras in Hell's Gate
About two hours from Nairobi, down the escarpment and past the steam plumes of the Olkaria geothermal field, you reach Hell's Gate National Park, one of the few parks in Kenya where you can cycle among wildlife. Mountain bikes are fitted at the gate, and you ride the main valley between red cliffs, zebras and giraffes lifting their heads as you pass, Fischer's Tower rising like a chimney beside the track. At the far end a local guide leads you down into the Ol Njorowa Gorge, a slot canyon of smooth volcanic rock where you squeeze, slide and climb past hot springs seeping from the walls. Tonight is on the shore of Lake Naivasha.
Rock, Water and the Road West
Climbers have an early option: a guided session on the volcanic plug of Fischer's Tower, with ropes, harnesses and an instructor who sets routes for beginners and experienced climbers alike. Non-climbers can take a dawn boat on Lake Naivasha instead, gliding past hippos, pelicans and calling fish eagles. By mid-morning you are on the road to the Maasai Mara, about five hours west through wheat fields, Narok town and finally the rolling grassland. You arrive in time for an afternoon game drive, when lions stir from the shade and elephants file down to drink. The day's two halves could hardly be more different.
A Rest Day, Mara Style
With a picnic in the vehicle and nowhere else to be, you spend the whole day exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve with your guide. Between July and October the wildebeest migration may be massed along the Mara River, and crossing points are watched for hours; at other times, resident lions, cheetahs and leopards keep the day lively. After three active days, this is a chance to rest your legs before the bigger challenges in Tanzania, though your camera will get no rest at all. In the evening your leader walks you through tomorrow's border flights and the plan for the volcano, so there are no surprises.
Over the Border to the Volcano
A light aircraft carries you from the Mara to Migori, where you leave Kenya, then to Kogatende for Tanzanian entry, and on to Lake Natron. The final approach is extraordinary: the lake below shades from rust to milky white, and Ol Doinyo Lengai rises more than two kilometres from the plain, its slopes streaked with pale ash. Your Tanzanian guide meets you on landing. In the evening a local guide walks you out across the soda flats towards the water, where lesser flamingos feed in long pink lines. This harsh, caustic lake is their key breeding site in East Africa, precisely because so few predators can reach the nests.
Waterfall Warm-Up, Then the Night Climb
Spend the morning walking up the Ngare Sero gorge, wading against the current between high walls to the waterfall at its head, a good test of balance and an easy way to keep cool. The afternoon is for rest: eat well, drink plenty of water and nap if you can. At about 11 pm you are driven to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, and around midnight you start climbing with your local mountain guides, head torches on. The path is steep from the first step, with loose ash underfoot and gullies near the top that demand hands as well as feet. About six hours of steady effort lie ahead.
Sunrise on the Mountain of God
Near dawn you haul yourself onto the crater rim, almost 3,000 metres up, as the sun lifts over the rift. Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai 'Mountain of God', is the only active volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which flows black and runny like engine oil and weathers white within days. Depending on its mood, you may see steaming vents, small spatter cones or fresh flows below the rim. The descent takes three to four hours of slithering down loose ash, hard on the knees. Back at the lake by late morning, the rest of the day is for recovery: sleep, a cool pool in the stream and a celebratory dinner.
Through Loliondo to the Serengeti
With legs still stiff, today is a passenger's day. You leave Natron on a rough road climbing west through the highlands of Loliondo, Maasai cattle country of red earth and acacia, where herders wave from the roadside and other vehicles are rare. After about five hours you enter the Serengeti at Klein's Gate in the north-east, and the change is sudden: open grass, kopjes and herds. The afternoon becomes a long game drive south through the Lobo area towards the centre of the park, with lions sprawled on granite boulders and giraffes browsing the crowns of the acacias.
The Long Light of the Serengeti
A full day in the Serengeti with your guide and a packed lunch. Dawn is the hour for leopards in the sausage trees along the Seronera River and for cheetahs scanning from termite mounds before the heat builds. Depending on the month, the great herds of wildebeest and zebra may be spread across the southern plains, streaming through the centre or far to the north near the Kenyan border. Midday brings hippos grunting in their pools, and the afternoon builds to lions stirring as the light turns gold. After the effort of Lengai, the sheer scale of these plains feels like a reward you have earned.
Flight to Arusha and Home
One last early drive on the plains, then you head to the Seronera airstrip for a scheduled light-aircraft flight to Arusha, about an hour over the Ngorongoro highlands and the rift wall. From the air you can trace much of your journey, and on a clear day the grey cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the one you stood on three days ago, shows to the north. In Arusha there is time for lunch and a shower before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your evening flight. You'll be finding Lengai's pale ash in your boot seams for months.
