5 Days Amboseli & Tsavo West Landscape Safari

Move from Amboseli’s open wetlands to the hills, lava country and greener pockets of Tsavo West. This route is built around contrast rather than the largest possible number of parks. In Amboseli, elephant can cross the plains with Kilimanjaro hidden or revealed behind changing cloud. Tsavo West asks for a different kind of attention: a bend in the road, a movement in scrub, the cool shade around a spring. Two nights in each area give you a full exploration day in both, with one connecting road journey between them.

Depart Nairobi for the Amboseli area on day one and spend the second day exploring its permitted park roads. Continue to Tsavo West on day three using the access route confirmed for your dates and conditions. A full fourth day combines wildlife drives with a Mzima Springs visitor-route stop when open. Return to Nairobi on day five. The itinerary keeps Tsavo East and the coast as optional extensions rather than squeezing them into the same five days.

Expect a mix of open views and denser vegetation where sightings take patience. The programme includes a driver-guide, the stated park entries and meals, with no mountain climb or unrestricted wildlife walk. Any spring-side walking follows the authorised visitor route and current instructions. Your guide leaves time for heat, road conditions and breaks. Share your arrival time, ages and walking comfort so the team can confirm a practical daily programme before you travel.

Ideal for: Travellers interested in contrasting southeastern Kenya landscapes without changing regions every night.

Day by day

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli’s elephant landscape

Meet your driver-guide in Nairobi for a morning start and follow the road southeast towards Amboseli. Take comfort stops along the way as the city gives way to farms, smaller settlements and drier plains. Your guide introduces the park’s wetlands and the way elephants use water and grazing through the day. Lunch and entry formalities come before any afternoon viewing, which depends on your actual arrival time. Kilimanjaro may appear between clouds, but there is no fixed mountain-view guarantee. Settle into the Amboseli area for the first of two nights, with a briefing that leaves tomorrow free for unhurried wildlife drives.

Day 2

Amboseli’s marsh edges and open plains

Leave in the cooler hours to explore Amboseli from its designated roads, taking time around the marsh edges where birds and mammals use the water. Your guide looks for elephant herds and explains the small behaviours that can make a sighting memorable: a calf keeping up, an older animal testing the air, or a group waiting before crossing. Pause for lunch and a rest through the warmer part of the day, then continue if conditions suit. The mountain’s visibility changes with cloud and light, so appreciate the landscape even when the summit is hidden. Keep wildlife at a respectful distance and follow the guide’s instructions at authorised stops.

Day 3

From Amboseli to Tsavo West’s volcanic country

After breakfast, pack up for the road transfer to Tsavo West using the route and gates confirmed by the team. The exact journey depends on current road conditions, so this day is not planned around a long list of extra stops. Watch the landscape shift from Amboseli’s open spaces towards hills, rocky ground and denser vegetation. Your driver-guide schedules comfort breaks, a meal and the necessary entry procedures before an afternoon drive if time allows. Wildlife can be harder to spot in thicker cover, which makes patient scanning useful. Arrive in the Tsavo West area with two nights ahead and a full day available for its different habitats.

Day 4

Wildlife roads and the visitor route at Mzima Springs

Explore Tsavo West with morning and afternoon wildlife drives chosen around current access and local animal activity. Look for contrasts between the dry volcanic ground and the vegetation around water, allowing your guide time to search the scrub rather than expecting the visibility of an open plain. When the site is open, stop at Mzima Springs and follow only the designated visitor route and any staff instructions. This is a short managed visit, not an unrestricted walk through wildlife country. Take lunch and a comfortable break before continuing the day’s drives. Hippo, crocodile and other sightings depend on conditions; the value is seeing how water changes this landscape.

Day 5

A considered return to Nairobi

Breakfast gives you a last quiet pause in the Tsavo West area before the drive back to Nairobi. The guide checks the departure plan and gate arrangements, then follows the confirmed road route with time for lunch and comfort stops. No long final wildlife drive is scheduled, because the journey and traffic approaching the city deserve a realistic allowance. Use the transfer to compare the two parks’ landscapes and ask any remaining questions about the birds or animals in your photographs. Finish at your agreed Nairobi address, or use a separately arranged airport transfer once the team has checked the flight time and a sensible connection buffer.
