12 Days Laikipia, Maasai Mara & Zanzibar Wellness Safari
Sunrise yoga above the plains, mindful bush walks, a night under the stars, a slow Zanzibar finish
12 Days Laikipia, Maasai Mara & Zanzibar Wellness Safari
This retreat trades the safari checklist for attention. You'll still see elephants, lions and reticulated giraffes, but you'll see them on foot, at walking pace, or from a vehicle that's switched off for twenty minutes so you can simply listen. Mornings begin with yoga on an open deck as the light rises over the plains, and the days unfold at the speed of breath rather than the speed of an itinerary.
In Laikipia, on the dry plateau below Mount Kenya, you walk with Samburu guides, trek alongside camels and sleep out under the stars on a raised platform with only a mosquito net between you and the Milky Way. Phones go into a drawer if you choose, and guided journaling helps you notice what shifts. Lake Naivasha brings a spa afternoon and a silent dawn on the water, and the Maasai Mara offers slow game drives that stay with a scene instead of chasing the next one.
Then you fly to Zanzibar, where the ocean takes over: sunrise yoga on the sand, swims at high tide, a full spa day and a morning among the clove and nutmeg trees that made the island famous. Menus throughout lean towards fresh, local, nourishing food, with every diet catered for.
Ideal for: Stretched professionals and mindful travellers who want wildlife, silence and movement in equal measure, with an ocean to finish.
The journey in brief
After an unhurried first night in Nairobi, you fly north to Laikipia for three nights of sunrise yoga, mindful walking safaris, a camel trek and a starlit sleep-out on a raised platform. A scenic drive through the Aberdare foothills brings you to Lake Naivasha for a spa afternoon and a silent dawn boat ride, before a short flight to the Mara and three nights of slow game drives, sit-spot practice and a bush dinner. From the Mara you fly via Nairobi to Zanzibar's east coast for three nights of beach yoga, ocean swims, a spa day and a spice farm visit, closing with a group reflection circle before you fly home carrying a little more quiet than you arrived with.
Highlights
Day by day
Arrive and Exhale
After the long flight, the first gift is space. A driver collects you from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and takes you to a quiet garden setting on the green edge of the city, where birdsong replaces traffic within minutes. There's nothing to do this afternoon but unpack, take a long shower and lie in the shade. Before dinner your wellness guide, a qualified yoga and mindfulness teacher who travels with the group, leads a gentle stretching and breathing session to shake off the flight, then hands each of you a notebook for the journey. Dinner is light and seasonal: grilled fish or spiced lentils, fresh greens and passion fruit. Bed comes early, and you'll sleep deeply.
North to the High Plateau
A short transfer to Wilson Airport and a light aircraft north, about an hour over the farms of central Kenya, with the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya off the right wing. You land on a dirt strip on the Laikipia plateau, where the air is dry and clear at around 1,800 metres and the land opens into acacia savannah, rocky hills and enormous sky. After lunch and a rest, your Samburu guide leads a gentle introductory walk, reading the tracks of the night: a porcupine's shuffling path, the dinner-plate prints of an elephant. As the sun drops, you sit on a warm rock to watch the light change in silence, then write your first journal entry by the fire.
Sun Salutations and Slow Footsteps
Wake before dawn to the bush stirring, and climb onto an open deck for sunrise yoga, the plains turning from grey to gold below you as you move through the sequence. After breakfast you set out on a mindful walking safari with your guide and an armed ranger. The pace is deliberately slow, with long pauses to listen to weaver birds, smell wild sage, run your fingers over the swollen thorns of a whistling acacia and watch reticulated giraffes from a respectful distance. Phones stay behind today, by agreement. After lunch and a siesta, your wellness guide leads a journaling session, then a sound bath at sundown as the hills fade to blue.
Walking With Camels, Sleeping With the Stars
Today you walk alongside a small string of camels, led by their Samburu handlers, through dry country of sandy riverbeds, rocky hills and scattered acacias. You can ride for a stretch if your legs tire, or simply walk beside the camels as they sway along with the water and lunch on their backs. Lunch is laid out in the shade of a wild fig on a riverbed. In the late afternoon you reach a raised sleep-out platform with a simple bed, a mosquito net and nothing above you but sky. After a fireside supper your guide traces the constellations, and you fall asleep counting shooting stars while a ranger keeps watch through the night.
Down to the Lake
Wake under the open sky to the first birdsong and walk back to camp for breakfast. A scenic drive of about four hours then takes you south-west through the farmland of the Aberdare foothills and down the Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Naivasha, its freshwater shores fringed with yellow fever trees and papyrus. After lunch by the water, the afternoon belongs to the spa: choose a massage with locally made oils, take a long swim, or lie in a hammock watching pelicans drift past. In the evening your wellness guide leads a slow yin session to release tired walking muscles. Dinner is lake-caught tilapia with herbs from the garden.
Silent Water, Then the Mara
Rise early for a dawn boat ride on the glassy lake, the engine cut once you're out among the papyrus so you drift and listen: a fish eagle's call, hippos exhaling, the plop of a kingfisher diving. Back on land there's breakfast, then a short light-aircraft flight from the Naivasha airstrip to the Maasai Mara and its rolling, endless grass. Your first afternoon drive is unhurried by design. Your guide switches off the engine whenever you find something worth watching, and you stay for as long as it takes to really see it, whether that's a lioness grooming her cubs or a dung beetle rolling its prize. Sundowners on a quiet hill.
The Art of the Slow Game Drive
Sunrise yoga on the deck, then a drive that might cover only a few kilometres in three hours, because you've stopped to watch a pride wake and stretch, a herd of elephants tearing at the grass, or a lilac-breasted roller flashing turquoise in the sun. Your guide encourages you to lower the camera for part of each sighting and simply notice: the sounds, the smells, the small details most visitors drive straight past. Lunch is back at camp, followed by a long siesta or an optional massage. The afternoon drive is short and quiet, ending with a sundowner and a few minutes of silent sitting as the sun slips behind the escarpment.
A Sit Spot and Supper Under the Stars
This morning your guide introduces the practice of a sit spot: a place in the bush within sight of your guide but apart from the group, where you sit alone for half an hour, watching and listening without any agenda. It sounds simple, yet most people find it the hardest and most rewarding half-hour of the trip. Afterwards the group shares what they noticed over breakfast. The rest of the day is a long, slow drive through a private conservancy, with lunch under a tree and a late-afternoon walk with a Maasai guide. In the evening, dinner is served in the bush by firelight, with the stars wheeling overhead. It's your last night in Kenya.
From Grass to Sand
A last sunrise over the Mara, then a light aircraft back to Nairobi's Wilson Airport and a short transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International for the flight south to Zanzibar, about an hour and a half. You swap the dust of the plains for warm, salty air and the rustle of palm fronds as you're driven across the island to the east coast. Your room opens towards the beach, where the Indian Ocean shifts between turquoise and deep blue with the tide. Take your first swim as the light softens, then sit down to a spiced fish curry with coconut rice under the palms. Tomorrow's yoga is on the sand, facing the sunrise.
Ocean Mornings and a Spa Day
Begin with yoga on the beach as the sun lifts straight out of the Indian Ocean in front of you. Then swim at high tide, when the lagoon fills with warm, clear water, or walk the tidal flats at low tide, where women farmers tend their seaweed lines and rock pools hold starfish and sea urchins. The rest of the day is a spa day: a massage with clove and coconut oil, a body scrub, a long soak and time to doze in the shade. In the late afternoon your wellness guide holds an optional journaling session, looking back over the journey so far, before a light supper on the sand.
Spice, Stone Town and Stillness
This morning you visit a spice farm in the island's interior, rubbing cardamom pods and lemongrass between your fingers, tasting fresh nutmeg, and hearing how island families have long used turmeric, ginger and cloves as everyday remedies. Lunch is a simple Swahili meal on the farm. Afterwards you can continue to Stone Town for an afternoon in its shaded alleys and harbour front, or return to the beach for a swim and a nap. As evening falls, everyone comes together for a closing circle led by your wellness guide, each person sharing one thing they'll carry home. Dinner is a farewell feast of grilled seafood on the beach.
Carry the Quiet Home
One last sunrise practice on the sand, perhaps the quietest of the trip, followed by a slow breakfast and a final swim. Before you leave, take a few minutes with your journal to read back through the days and notice how your handwriting, and your breathing, have changed since Nairobi. Your driver leaves in good time for the hour's drive to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, where onward connections run via Nairobi, Dar es Salaam or the Gulf. Your wellness guide will send a short home practice, ten minutes a day, to help keep the plains and the ocean within reach once you're back at your desk.
